The spokesperson for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),Fabian Benjamin, stated that the glitches involving the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results are not related to any ethnic bias.
“It’s unfortunate. It’s something that we never anticipated,” Benjamin remarked during a discussion on X Spaces.
He refuted suggestions that the issue, which resulted in a widespread failure among candidates, was aimed at those from the Southeast region.
Benjamin further explained that the members of the board were distressed upon discovering the glitch.
He illustrated the situation by comparing it to an email that appears sent but hasn't actually been delivered due to someone prematurely shutting down their device after hitting 'send'.
He clarified that the individual responsible for the error is not actually a board employee, but rather a service provider contracted by JAMB and compensated handsomely for this work.
He noted, “I shouldn’t delve too deep into this as it might seem like I’m evading responsibility.”
He strongly dismissed the notion that the incident was deliberate, attributing it instead to the carelessness of the assigned person.
“It was merely carelessness; he didn’t grasp the weight of his responsibilities. It’s unfortunate that this incident involved a particular region of the country and, to some degree, it may reflect poorly on us,” he explained.
Benjamin also rebutted allegations regarding the incompetence of JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, asserting that he is highly capable and involved in all facets of the board. “Some of us believe he may be too engaged.
He wants to know who enters at the gate and is involved in every part of the organization.
Therefore, the issues of incompetence or carelessness do not apply here. Regardless of how competent or engaged one is, as long as tasks are delegated, someone may disappoint due to negligence,” he concluded.
