More than 1,000 competitors from 31 nations have gathered in Abuja for the 2025 African Karate Championship, set to take place from July 21 to July 28.
President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria, Silas Agara, informed reporters on Sunday that 31 countries, along with the host nation Nigeria, will compete in four distinct categories of the sport.
The categories include cadet for athletes aged 14 to 15, junior for those aged 16 to 17, senior, and para karate for competitors over 18 years old.
Agara expressed satisfaction in announcing the participation of most countries in the upcoming championship, noting the presence of officials from these countries who are here to provide technical support.
He stated, “Our federation has been working on the ground for the past week to ensure that logistical arrangements are complete and accommodation is arranged for the attending nations.”
By the deadline for registration on Wednesday night, 31 countries have confirmed their participation, with over 1,000 athletes and accompanying officials expected.
He also mentioned the challenges faced with logistics, including accommodation, transportation from hotels, and visa processing for athletes and officials, but expressed optimism about being on track.
Additionally, the General Assembly for the African Championship will convene in Abuja during this timeframe.
The federation's Technical Director, Dave Jegede, confirmed that Nigeria plans to field 60 athletes who are fully prepared and excited as the competition approaches. “
In anticipation, we have been preparing,” he said, expressing that, having hosted the event, they organized several championships leading up to it to keep the athletes engaged.
“We have held about four national championships and two regional ones. Our athletes have regularly participated in competitions and have been in training camps, and they are in good spirits.”
He highlighted that the team comprises numerous African champions, including gold, silver, and bronze medalists, as well as Commonwealth medalists.
