Nigeria's Super Falcons are in a strong position to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games football tournament after defeating South Africa 1-0 in the first leg of the final qualifying round.
The match played at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday, saw a dominant Nigerian side creating early pressure but struggling to convert their chances.
However, a penalty awarded in the 43rd minute proved to be the turning point.
South Africa's Noko Matlou brought down Chinwendu Ihezuo inside the box, and Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up coolly to slot the penalty home, giving Nigeria a crucial lead.
Despite opportunities in the second half, the Super Falcons were unable to extend their advantage due to a combination of missed chances and resolute South African defending.
With a 1-0 lead, the Super Falcons now travel to South Africa for the second leg of the tie on Tuesday, April 9th.
The winner over the two legs will secure a coveted spot at the Paris Olympics this summer.
